Brookhaven National Laboratory – Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB)
PROJECT DETAILS
The Brookhaven National Laboratory Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB) is a state-of-the-art facility that groups existing energy-related research scientists into one facility with collaborative environments to facilitate and realize the scientific benefits of multi-disciplinary collaboration. EW Howell Construction Group completed the 87,000 gross-square-foot, 2-story building in March 2013. This project is important for the Long Island economy. During the 2-year construction period, it helped to create hundreds of local jobs, and the majority of the construction costs were spent directly with Long Island subcontractors and suppliers.
LEED GOLD
The Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB) is LEED Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). A research focus at the ISB is developing effective uses of renewable energy through improved conversion, transmission, and storage, with applications in the smart grid, batteries, and photovoltaics. This project was a brownfield site which was remediated for this project. Stormwater collection, efficient plumbing fixtures, and other technologies contribute to a water use reduction of over 50% compared to conventional construction.
